Week 3

Wednesday, March 19, 2008

Been revising the story this week trying to get it ironed out a bit. I'm not sure about the explosion taking place at the end and think maybe a more subtle way to humiliate the alien would work better. Like maybe instead of blowing up the door, he stands there for ages trying to work it out and someone pushes through from the other side and like whacks him out of the way. We still have time to get it worked out though, I think Rachael has made a very rough script plan, and Kerrie and I will start the first draft script in the holidays.

I want the look of this film to be inspired by the cold war era/60s propaganda. I researched some of the world leaders of the time and found some interesting character inspirations.

De Gaulle

Churchill

Mao

Stalin

I've been trying to think of who would sit where. I think I've worked out that England would be first, and would be happy to sit next to America. Then France would sit between those two countries and China and Russia. I can't see America wanting to sit next to the communists, haha.

Concept sketches

Thursday, March 13, 2008

Here are some concept sketches that I have done for our project. So far we have decided to base the story on a 'true story'. Rachael Walker couldn't work out why she couldn't get an automatic door to open at the shopping centre. She walked back and forth, waved her hands at the sensors etc. and nothing happened. Then a man walked in from the other side of the door, and pushed it. Turns out the door wasn't automatic, and Rachael felt like a bit of an idiot.

We decided to push it further by raising the stakes. The idea is that there is an alien presenting some sort of plan or benefit (world domination/recipe for eternal life/philosophies of peace etc) to the human race. He is pompous and impressive, and also very short. He walks down from his podium and reaches a door, which is expects to be automatic (being from a more advanced society), so he walks straight into it. He gets really angry and frustrated, and the representatives of the world laugh at him. He pulls out a gun and shoots the door, and there is like this massive explosion. Then we cut to the world leaders sitting in dust and ash and one of them delivers a witty one-liner.

Anyway here are some quick sketches I did of the alien/earth reps:
