Week 2

Saturday, March 17, 2007

This week Mark looked at my inn and helped me see where it needed improvement. I need to move the pole a little and push back the perspective so I can have a larger space behind the stairs. Makes sense.

The lecture was about breaking down scripts for pre-production. Mark told us that there are several steps in pre-production scheduling, but for this lecture we were concerned with the first three: reading the script, script mark up and script break down. Marking up the script involves colour coding the script for each pre-prod department. For example, items concerning the prop department were underlined in purple and vehicles and animals were underlined in pink (yay, pink!). Breaking down the script is also a colour coded process, and involves writing information from each scene on a separate page, so that the concept artist can see what needs to be designed at glance.

On another note, I have to say that I saw Pan's Labyrinth and it was a truly awesome movie! Even if some people found the plot lacking and the characters a bit wooden (I thought the plot and the acting was great, personally - but whatever), they still have to admit that the film was visually stunning. It was both ugly and beautiful, brutal and gentle. I visited the website and it contains some awesome pre-production stills with commentary! I found all the concept work to be elegant - and I could not BELIEVE that the Faun was almost entirely costume and makeup! Get OUT!

A movie I've been following for a while, since it's pre-production stages, is Northern Lights (or the Golden Compass if you're American. Why do they do this? Why does the US need its own special title?!) from the His Dark Materials Trilogy. I read the books as a teenager and I was hooked. It is fantasy and it deals with psychology, science and theology. I hear they are dumbing down the theological aspect for film, which annoys me. I hope this movie doesn't suck. If the concept sketches are anything to go by, though - it will be really cool. I found some production stills and concept art at Access Hollywood. You have to wade through pictures of Nicole Kidman and Daniel Craig (Yay! James Bond!) to get to the concept design.

Shiny actors and pretty concepts.

Official site.

Nicole Kidman looks really good in this. I don't like her very much usually, but she seems to fit this role very well! Also, the animation aspect of His Dark Materials must be in production! I need to find some concept art! Each character has a physical embodiment of their soul connected to them. The souls take the form of an animal. I can't see any puppets etc. in the production stills so I assume these animals will be added later with CGI.

Week 1

Thursday, March 8, 2007

Week 1's lecture and tutorial covered Concept design! Books were scattered around the classroom to look at, and we were shown a concept artist that specialises in dinosaurs.
We were given a short story (a Brothers Grimm fairytale) and were asked to complete a concept layout for the inn featured in it. This was to be finished by Week 2's lesson.

My first impression of the tail was that it was not the typical fairytale we feed children these days, filled with happy endings and animal companions. It was dark, morbid and the only real fantasy aspect of the tale was the ability for men to live for a night without their eyes, hand and heart.

I decided that my inn would therefore be dark and dank, yet it still had to have a level of comfort (the purpose of an inn). I also chose to keep it set in 'the past', probably in the 17th Century, about 100 years before the Brothers Grimm wrote the story. My reason for this is that the Brothers Grimm collected folk tales and fairytales from printed and oral sources, therefore it is possible for the stories to be set any time before the Grimms published them.

Setting the inn underground hinted at the dark and dank mood I was aiming for, but also makes it earthy and comfortable.

Drawing buildings is not a strong point for me, so I found this to be a challenge. I did some quick research on architecture and interiors. Actually, this made me feel worse about my poor building-drawing ability... but it did help in the end, especially with the staircase.
I chose to colour it, partially because it looked terrible with just the outlines, but mostly because I find communicating with colour is essential when I'm shooting for a certain mood.
